BEACH TOURISM IN SOUTH AFRICA - PROVIDING SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Beaches are a key tourism attraction for destinations around the world. As an icon of tourism they often rank alongside culture and heritage in their importance for destination branding, as well as providing a unique backdrop for coastal resort development and tourism accommodation, fine dining, shopping and a range of recreational activities.

In terms of their geomorphology, beaches are considered the most dynamic environments on earth. Successful beach tourism provides a destination with a huge competitive advantage, but it requires robust partnerships across stakeholders to protect the natural resource and use it in the most sustainable way. For this reason the first day of CMT 2009 will be dedicated to a capacity building Beach Tourism Workshop.

The focus of this one-day workshop is to engage stakeholders, hear about the current status of beach tourism in Southern Africa, identify issues and needed resources, mobilise interest and instigate a high level planning process to position Southern African beaches as internationally attractive and well-managed tourism destinations.

The workshop will be undertaken on a positive note, acknowledging the various stakeholders and interest groups of beach users so that an integrated and sustainable plan provides something for everyone.
